About Daniel Hernandez-Salazar

Daniel Hernandez-Salazar I was born in Guatemala in 1956. My interest on photography began during my childhood. During the 1980s Guatemalan civil war, I worked as a photojournalist for international press agencies. As an Independent Photographer, I focus on historical memory, documentary photography, portrait, nudes, architecture and landscape. Historical memory becoming my main topic of work and activism. Although I master digital equipment and techniques, I keep practicing analogue photography and darkroom work. I am one of a few still practicing and teaching this technique in Guatemala.

I have done more than 30 solo shows and more than 40 group shows in North, Central and South America, Europe, Japan and Korea. For my artistic work in service of Human Rights, I received in 1998 the Jonathan Mann Humanitas Award from the International Association of Physicians in Aids Care. Later, I was named Knight and Officer of the Ordre Des Artes et des Lettres by the French Government in 2005 and 2017. Part of my oeuvre has been published in two personal anthologies by Kage Shobo, (Tokio, 2006) and University of Texas Press (Austin, 2007).
